Global Bottle Maker Tightens Up Quality Assurance With NetSuite

2021-04-20
For companies that make food-grade products, a reputation built on quality and product safety is not just a competitive differentiator; it is critical to business survival. Yet maintaining this reputation today is more challenging than ever. Apart from the economic and logistical headwinds facing all global exporters since the onset of COVID-19, companies producing food-grade goods face the additional challenge of increasingly fragile consumer trust as their customers have become increasingly sensitive to health and safety issues in the wake of the pandemic.

Effective quality control and product traceability is more critical than ever for food-safe product manufacturers, yet many companies lack the technological infrastructure needed to manage and record production and quality control data precisely. Critical product data is often scattered across many disparate spreadsheets, unintegrated business software applications and email chains. In this environment, data inconsistencies and errors are almost inevitable. Even worse, if quality issues are discovered, it can be near impossible for companies to retrace their steps. If these issues cannot be resolved, damage to customer confidence and brand image can be irreparable.

For one global manufacturer of high quality plastic bottles (name confidential), transitioning to Oracle NetSuite ERP has been key to addressing these challenges. The company kickstarted a digital transformation project in March 2021 covering sales, production, procurement, warehouse and barcode systems, quality inspection and finance processes. The project shall be led by Oracle NetSuite China Partner Trigger Networks and shall leverage NetSuite’s Manufacturing cloud software module to implement the desired business processes.

This bottle manufacturer has built an impressive reputation for product quality and safety over the years and serves customers in more than 100 countries. Products include juice bottles, mini squeezable bottles, e-liquid bottles and plastic containers, from materials including PET and LDPE plastic. Each of these products requires certification by the U.S. FDA and by food safety authorities in Europe. The company is headquartered in California with operations in The Netherlands and in the Yangtze River Delta region in China, where they hold a factory that is joint-owned with a local Chinese partner.

With Oracle NetSuite, each of the company’s team members in Europe, China and The U.S will have access to a “single version of the truth” for their business data, which will foster collaboration and support effective quality management. At the project kick-off meeting held in the joint venture factory in China, the company’s CFO remarked: "I am looking forward to implementing processes for tracking all our product batches and customer orders in NetSuite. When we get to the stage where we can trace customer orders back to the relevant sales record, work order, which machine made the product, and which supplier provided the materials etc., it will be a massive game changer for our ongoing quality assurance efforts. We’ll definitely sleep a little easier at night with this kind of visibility. It will be great when all teams whether in US or China have access to consistent detailed information in real time so we can instantly get on the same page if there are any quality issues that need to be dealt with. It goes without saying that all of this will have a positive effect on our teams’ productivity as well. Overall we are very excited about what we will be able to achieve with NetSuite in the future!”.
